my God, not bell hooks. her writing was a catalyst for countless Black & people of color to become writers, thinkers, scholars. i never took it for granted that she literally blazed a trail at my alma mater. it felt empowering walking where she walked, even if 30 yrs apart. so💔.

bell hooks said “To be loving is to be open to grief, to be touched by sorrow, even sorrow that is unending.” we carry people on with us. we carry their legacies and teachings with us, with every step we take and every act of love we enact on ourselves and others. even in grief.

Your Monday reminder that absolutely nothing about the work of equity and justice is efficient or optimized or linear or consistent and there are very few big wins. It’s all minor amounts of tenuous progress held together with optimism and chewing gum. Still worth it though.

If this was about babies, there would be universal healthcare. Free education. Free daycare. Southern states would be doing all they can to drop the Black maternal mortality rate. This is about power and control
