Note that this man’s militarized mind instantly goes to the etymological resonance with war rather than with the term’s even older association with refugees.

Also if I was sent to cover this I'd be willing to get arrested for doing my job. But they won't arrest you b/c that'll be a PR crisis. They'll just probably blackball you to never have access to official interviews with NU bosses again. Is that what journos are afraid of losing?

Forming a faculty defense line with faculty to try to stop arrests. Might be my last tweet for a while. Free Palestine and bless our courageous students!

American schools have all this money to invest in weapons manufacturing but their students work multiple jobs and can’t afford housing or a meal plan and their adjunct staff are using their car trucks as offices….

Chicago Public Media says they want to reach diverse audiences, but cut the people who make these programs. Cut corporate greed and save WBEZ and Vocalo Radio 91.1 instead! actionnetwork.org/forms/099c98ca…

The Supreme Court is hearing a case literally today on whether it's legal to punish people who are unhoused for being homeless. It's not nothing to have the transit agency of the country's 3rd largest city say homelessness is not a crime as they answer a rider's genuine question.

Criminalization and forced encampment are grounded in the idea that you have force the unhoused to get treatment--as if it's easy for anyone to get a mental health treatment or a recovery bed even if they are housed and have a job (It's not). (13/x)

Don’t usually do *this* but, thread: Monday, SCOTUS debates the criminalization of homelessness. That means many folks are sounding off on the topic. I’ve spent 4 yrs covering this for The Washington Post, and need to reality-check assumptions getting thrown around this week (1/x)

If anyone made a broad claim about any other group like that, we wouldn't take it seriously. But that's how we treat the homeless: dismissively, or at best like they are helpless children lacking a strong paternalist guiding hand (4/x)

Hard to believe that after more than 2 years of reporting, this is finally out in the world. It wouldn't have happened without the sources who shared their stories with me. I hope the story does them justice
