The videos from the Stanford @Codex Futurelaw conference are now online.

Here is a link to the panel, where I was fortunate enough to speak on 'Artificial Intelligence and the State of the Art in Law'

The chilling show of force at the University of Texas at Austin is a disproportionate response to an apparently peaceful protest. Sending in a phalanx of law enforcement threatens protected speech where it should be at its most free: a public university like UT Austin.…

When someone says 'we can't do that, it will divert attention from THIS' when it is diverting exactly none of your attention from that, what they're doing is single-threading society. They're insisting we all think through each thing together, and preventing parallel progress.

There are a lot of examples related to schools specifically. Parents demand that schools do something, rather than doing it themselves.

There's sometimes a tragedy of the commons style reason for needing coordination at a higher level, but its more rare than people want to admit

There is this immense mental cage that people construct, plain to see: The 'ideal' place to do something is always one level up from the responsibility you can affect. That way, you're never responsible for it not getting done.

this is an example

The video is now up and public!

Back in October, I had the opportunity to speak at Qcon SF on my work with Starling Lab, on combating AI-generated fake images, as part of a fantastic track including Ryan Dahl (creator of Node.js) and Miško Hevery (creator of Angular)

Lotta people real mad to discover that just because their politics matches the default doesn't mean they're 'not political'.

You just know these details were pitched to a room full of VCs giddily nodding along as the details of this 'innovative financing' were revealed. 'It's a payday loan but you have to sit through 6 mos of Zoom calls first.' 'Brilliant!'

the heavy split towards Democrats voting against this bill is depressing. i vaguely remember when the D party pretended to care about things like civil liberties; now they cannot even seem to notice the contradiction between 'trump is a fascist' and 'let's give the executive…

The “Minneapolis Public Seating Authority” placing unauthorized benches around the city so people actually have somewhere to sit down has been one of my favorite recent acts of civil disobedience.

I think about the intro to Dworkin's piece all the time: 'You won’t ever know the worst that happened to Nicole Brown Simpson in her marriage, because she is dead and cannot tell you. And if she were alive, remember, you wouldn’t believe her.'

Domestic violence is a kind of small-scale terrorism. What OJ Simpson did to Nicole Brown Simpson was not the event of one night—it was a years long campaign that thousands of women suffer at other men’s hands. Read Andrea Dworkin’s memorial to Nicole: evergreenreview.com/read/in-memory…

To be human, to remain human, to improve as humans-- it is absolutely essential to piss on this grim, smug, sneering incuriosity masquerading as taste. This unearned, mis-applied cynicism. Smash it. Smash this impulse within yourself. The weird nuance of human language is a joy.

In the future, when nearly every image we see is fake (and generated with AI), how are we going to tell the difference between real and fake images?

Here's a piece I wrote about my work with Starling Lab on a project called Authenticated Attributes open.substack.com/pub/starlingla…
