If you have a complaint about someone’s paper, submit a letter to the editor. Don’t be passive-aggressive and complain anonymously on PubPeer.

As someone who has spent a lot of time with maternal mortality data over the last 15 years, I have thoughts about this new paper in AJOG. ajog.org/article/S0002-…

The maternal death checkbox is absolutely not valid. I, myself, have encountered deaths of 70 year olds with the box checked. There are also errors in the other direction (the box isn’t checked ), particularly among people who were early in pregnancy when they died.

My concern though is the checkbox isn’t how most states are gathering their maternal mortality data these days. In Ohio, we start with the check box and try to find the matching vital event (e.g., a birth certificate, fetal death record) or a coroner’s report.

I think the current process is the best it can be given our system in the U.S. If the authors’ point is that this is hard to do, I agree. However, I don’t think focusing on the check box is of any value as that’s not what states are actually doing.

Remembering the time my boss told me I’d never be successful in academia bc I have 3 kids. She was SHOCKED when I said “oh that’s weird, bc y’all* gave my husband tenure just last week and oddly enough, he ALSO has 3 kids. What’s different?” Good times. *the same department

I still find it unbelievable that one day someone decided that causation was tied to human action (no causation without manipulation) instead of it just being a property of nature, and that most current debates in the field trace back to this misconception.

Wiley Clinical and Health CONCLUSION Insurance discontinuity and uninsurance are common within our pregnant people seeking care at CHCOs. Our findings suggest that insurance status should be regarded as a dynamic rather than a static characteristic during pregnancy and should be measured accordingly.

Andrew Althouse @Lach_cribb I feel conflicted about whether TTE is net positive or negative. I don’t think it is a “framework”, it’s simply a branding exercise that has been useful to popularize concepts in causal inference that have been known for a while.

This 👇🏽 Researchers of all backgrounds (incl those with clinical training and those who’ve dedicated their training & career to research) have unique, valuable contributions. But there are no shortcuts to becoming a strong (or even competent!) researcher
