Israel’s talk of a ‘regional coalition’ to combat Iran seems wishful thinking. In fact, its partners are now doing the opposite- trying to rein Israel in. My Channel 4 News report on what happened last night:

So was that really it? If so, more of an Iranian whimper than a bang - though whether Biden can persuade Netanyahu of that is a different question.

Iran miscalculated. But so did Israel. One has been widely condemned by western leaders tonight. The other has not.

Very curious to learn what, if any, steps Iran has taken to protect its nuclear program ahead of tonight. Location of stockpiles of 60%, 20%, and advanced centrifuges? Status of air defense around its key nuclear sites? Would be very surprised if it’s business as usual.

Not sure if this is the dreaded moment everything since Oct 7 has been building toward, but it certainly feels like it could be it.

The fact that the Iranian opening salvo is a much-telegraphed dispatch of hundreds of slow UAVs is bizarre, or not: it could be that Iran wants a…

We are in the strange situation of Iran launching drones which will take hours to arrive - and which many in Iran’s leadership will hope cause limited damage in order to prevent a wider war - but enough damage to make Iran’s Revolutionary Guards feel better than a damp squib.

Footage here of Iranian missiles fired at Ashkelon by an Iranian proxy militia in Iraq. Or so a group claimed a few days ago. No indication they hit target.

There’s a choreography about Iran’s just launched attack - which is not in Iran’s favour. US & Israeli Intel knew it was coming. The question is whether Iran emerges avenged or weakened. And that may determine how Israel responds.

Iran has closed airspace over Tehran. US says sending naval ships at speed to Red Sea. Israeli cabinet due to meet in a bunker later. It is the rumble of a war nobody claims to want but could be triggered by mistake.

My ⁦Channel 4 News⁩ report on Israel bracing for possible Iranian attack. From proxies and/or from Iran itself. Or is it that moment when America/Israel pull aside the curtain and find the mighty Mideast Wizard of Oz (Iran) isn’t so mighty after all? channel4.com/news/israel-br…

Iran boxed itself into a rhetorical corner: it has to respond to Israel & can’t do nothing. Today’s capture of a ship probably only the beginning. But a barrage of missiles could fail to reach Israeli targets- making Iran look weak. So maybe damned if they do - and if they don’t.
