How else can we see space through the atmosphere? The 28 dishes of NSF's National Radio Astronomy Observatory | NRAO Very Large Array use radio waves to help it resolve tiny details. Working together, its separate antennas create a telescope with a resolution equal to that of a single 22-mile diameter dish!

Answer Time: All of these! Other things that would fit- the island of Manhattan almost twice, approx. 5447 NASA's James Webb Space Telescope mirrors, and 22 and a half #StarWars Star Destroyers.

We don’t just use telescopes—sometimes other types of observatories are needed. In 2016, NSF’s LIGO announced that we had found proof of gravitational waves— Einstein was right! 5 years later, LIGO is still running and making more detections than ever before.

Apollo 11 astronauts, Aldrin and Collins visited Kitt Peak on Apr. 29, 1964. The visitor’s log shows their signatures & describes the viewing conditions: “seeing fair, flashes of good (Moon low)” 5 yrs later, they made their historic voyage to the Moon. #Apollo11At50 #Apollo50th

Happy #Apollo50th to our friends NASA! The moon landing is truly inspiring, and we continue exploring the depths of space from NSF’s ground-based observatories. With exciting images and new data coming from Event Horizon 'Scope & LIGO, who knows what the next big discovery will be!

Exploring the mysteries of dark energy and black holes. Identifying exoplanets. Capturing the origins of galaxies. Just some of what's happening at #NSFfunded ground-based observatories, windows on the universe that allow us to gaze farther out and further back than ever before.

When you think of space, you probably think of our friends NASA, but NSF also supports space exploration and is the federal leader for ground-based astronomy.
