This is what minority rule looks like in America. Five people, including one alleged rapist and one husband of one of the most powerful insurrectionists in America, just enacted policy. John Roberts is being lauded as a “moderate” for wanting to symbolically keep Roe (1/)

but eviscerate any rights it gave to women. How nice. The justices and, for that matter, politicians on both sides of the aisle, are telling us to fix the issue by voting. That would be great, except many state legislatures are gerrymandered beyond recognition. (2/)

Even the ones that aren't are so infected with campaign contributions that legislators can't actually address the needs of the people in their districts. (We, of course, have the Supreme Court to thank for that one, too.) (3/)

The Senate is, of course, wildly undemocratic; anti-abortion voters have vastly more power than pro-choice voters. And even if we manage to pass some good laws, SCOTUS always has the threat of striking those down. (4/)

It's not like this in a lot of other countries. It didn't used to be like this in the US. Originally, SCOTUS couldn't review laws at all. And since then, Congress has often used "jurisdiction stripping," which means that it tells the courts they can't review certain laws. (5/)

By and large, it's perfectly legal! We got away from it as we started to see the courts as beacons of justice instead of reactionary, arch-conservative roadblocks to progress. Those days are over, or at least they should be. (6/)

So go to protests (there are a bunch happening at 5 PM today), donate to abortion funds, but also--don't forget our power to fix the courts. thenation.com/article/societ… (7/7)

Rev Barber: the same people who restrict voting rights, restrict women's rights. If they're cynical enough to be together, we need to be smart enough to come together. #BansOffOurBody

Wow, what a weird coincidence that the policies Delaney thinks are most popular for Democrats just so happen to be the policies that Delaney personally supports

Federal courts ruled earlier this year that AL, GA, and LA each had to draw an additional “majority-minority” House district to satisfy federal law. In unsigned, unexplained orders, #SCOTUS *blocked* those rulings — resulting in three R seats that would likely have been D seats.

Another huge delay on Mass Ave caused by an unloading Amazon delivery truck. Do folks know anyone in DC local government who is fighting to keep delivery companies from monopolizing our public roads and bike lanes? Council of DC DCist

But can it pass the the real exams of smiling passively while you hang out with business execs in Sao Paulo on the school trip?

If you live in a blue state and don't see your Senator on this list, we DC residents would appreciate it if you primaried them. NJ and NY, Bob Menendez and Kirsten Gillibrand are both up in 2024 . . .
