Written a few weeks ago, the Titanic analogy seems grimly prescient given yesterday’s story from Helena Horton. If The Labour Party really has chosen to gut support for UK food & nature via SFI, the future cost of dealing with the consequences will dwarf the ‘savings’ today.

Sadly after 20+ years with a minimum of 3 pairs of Lapwings in this field, they are gone. Badger sets in the next field and all ground nesting birds have disappeared. We need to discuss this biodiversity loss before the poor birds are gone for good. RSPB Scotland NFU Scotland

70% of UK land is farmed. If we want nature to recover, this is where it happens. Farmers like James Rebanks are already doing it – farming with wildlife, not against it. But without proper funding, we risk losing it all. Rachel Reeves: increase funding, grow our future.

Something for the weekend? New Wheat from the Chaff - out now on the 'Farm Gate' podcast channel Joe Stanley and ffinlo Costain chew the fat net zero, SFI, AD and Monbiot. Listen now: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/whe…

With Helena Horton reporting that government plans to exclude ‘large’ farms from support for nature-friendly farming, a reminder that ‘larger’ farms under Defra stats = 75% of farmed area. We’d be abandoning any chance of achieving our nature targets.
