What does love mean during a pandemic? A journal entry about being on the front lines that became a reflection about what we must do to protect those we love. The better we are at #socialdistancing, the sooner we can all reunite. #flattenthecurve The New York Times nytimes.com/2020/03/27/sty…

My heart breaks for NYC. Like Dr. Fauci, I trained at Weill Cornell Medicine #NYP. Elmhurst, the hospital in this article, is a few miles from where I had my continuity clinic. I tried to warn my friends weeks ago but it was already too late and it will get worse from here.

My colleagues EvergreenHealth made a practical, useful document on lessons we learned from the COVID pandemic and how to prepare as a hospital. evergreenhealth.com/covid-19-lesso…

I spent 2 days in the "hot zone" in New York hospitals, witnessing needless death and heartache, and heroic, shattered health workers. One doctor spends her days treating patients, holding their hands--then goes home and cries. Her message: "Stay home." nyti.ms/3a1GATB

I started off writing about Italy’s experience w #coronavirus. It very quickly became my own. This NYT Magazine story’s for all the health workers out there, New Yorkers — and this great city of ours. nytimes.com/2020/04/14/mag…

Dr. Lorna M. Breen, a top emergency room doctor at a Manhattan hospital that treated coronavirus patients, died by suicide on Sunday, according to her father, Dr. Philip C. Breen. “She tried to do her job," he said, "and it killed her." nyti.ms/2zBbwgR

#3, cont: And, sadly, I’ve been surprised by how quickly we’ve become inured to these staggering numbers. The U.S. is up to 90,000 deaths – that’s a packed Rose Bowl. The toll of Covid is truly devastating; let’s not get used to it. Remember the humanity of every person /10

Before Covid-19, health care workers were already vulnerable to depression and suicide. Mental health experts now fear even more doctors, nurses and emergency responders on the front lines will be prone to trauma-related disorders. nyti.ms/2ZaG1oH

🚨I wrote a new piece about the Patchwork Pandemic--not one crisis but many interconnected ones playing out in very different ways across the country, making things harder to predict, control, or come to terms with. The piece has three parts. 1/ theatlantic.com/health/archive…

When discussing the toll of #COVID19 I try hard not to use the term “deaths” but “people who have died.” These are not numbers. They are human lives, families, communities and heartbreak. Please honor these brave souls and the #HealthcareHeroes who’ve cared for them.

I turn off the lights. These bulbs are old, not the newer LEDs. There is a lingering glow as the hot tungsten filaments gradually cool. I watch them as the room slowly goes dark. A lingering glow... and then nothing. I am exhausted, but I can’t sleep. A monster awaits. 1/

The elevator doors slide open. There’s already someone inside, one of the hospitalists. He moves over to one side as I enter, subconsciously distancing. I look at him and smile, “Coming or going?” He doesn’t answer right away. Instead, he pauses, as if trying to remember. 1/

🚨I wrote about what health-care workers are going through, how exhausted & scared they are, and what this 3rd pandemic surge is doing to them. It’s not like the first 2. It’s worse. How much slack is left in the system? Iowa nurse: “There is none” 1/ theatlantic.com/health/archive…

THREAD: Vaccines & transmission The emerging, expected evidence that #vaccines reduce transmission is a game-changer, but the focus on herd immunity can give the impression that we won’t see a benefit until most are vaccinated. Not true. 1/ Apoorva Mandavilli x.com/EricTopol/stat…

1/ Covid (UC San Francisco) Chronicles, Day 357 I’ve taken a little break from my threads – Covid is slowing down (yippee!) & I’ve gotten busy hosting In the Bubble. Thanks for your patience. Today, I’ll update numbers, take a deeper dive into new CDC recs, & cover a few odds & ends.

This is our warning call, America. Cases are now climbing again in a majority of states--esp across the northeast and midwest. CDC Director Walensky is right to be sounding the alarm. This is how surges start.

Seeing “COVID+” start to fill my patient list once again, and it’s hard to put into words how tired I am. How tired we all are. Get vaccinated. Please.
