Looking forward to speaking at “Making Space: Peopling and Placing the Matter of Jewish Studies” on April 15th in Ithaca, NY. Research focuses on the potential for a causal link btw Jewish immigration and textile firm clustering btw 1880-1930.

Proud to have received the Westchester Municipal Planning Federation’s 2024 Scholarship award for graduate and undergraduate planning students. I look forward to continuing research on both housing/land use policy and local institutional development.

Progress continues on the American Jewish Atlas Project (now officially my honors thesis). Here is the WIP locality map, which utilizes a novel dataset of stable geographies to display well known AJYB (1907, 1917, 1927, & 1937) and Hackenburg (1880) population statistics.

26 years ago, two years after the introduction of effective HIV treatment, the Bay Area Reporter, San Francisco’s lesbian and gay community newspaper, ran ‘No Obits’ as its headline. It was the first edition not to report an AIDS death in almost 15 years.

The 1865 New York State Census contains birthplace data down to the town-level. Here is the map for Irish-born New Yorkers, who were clustered around NYC, Albany, and the Erie Canal generally.

This dataset, part of my WIP American Jewish Atlas, shows how restrictive immigration laws in the U.S & U.K redirected migration flows to South America and the Levant. Data on arrivals was collected from the AJYB, Mirelman 2018 (Argentina), and Gartner 1960 (England).

Here's the map for all German-born New Yorkers in the 1865 NYS Census, excluding those born in Prussia and Austria. The largest cluster was in Western NY, where some municipalities had 40% or more of their population born in Germany.
