Yesterday saw the publication of a new interactive attendance data set and it's fantastic! You can find the tool here:Ā lnkd.in/edWEFnAb

Firstly, we need to focus on the 35% of children who miss between 5% and 15% of school annually - roughly 2-6 weeks. That is over 1.1m in secondary and over 1.3m in primary. These pupils are typically missing odd days, which are data shows has the worst impact on attainment. 2/6

But this also has a positive impact on those pupils who already have very high attendance, through less disruption, better behaviour and less pressure on teachers to juggle the catch up for pupils who have missed different lessons. A win win. 3/6

Secondly, our data shows that not only do we need to support pupils brilliantly from year 6 to year 7 (and lots of schools do this *brilliantly*), but also from year 7 to year 8 where absence starts to creep up. Thoughts from #edutwitter on why this is, gratefully received. 4/6

Thirdly, none of this can be at the expense of severely absent pupils, who miss over 50% of school. There were over 19,000 SA pupils in primary and over 102,000 in secondary. This is where we need a strong multi agency response and as schools to can't resolve this alone. 5/6

Finally, all feedback from schools, teachers, parents and pupils about how you use this data is welcome. Our teachers and leaders are so dedicated and skilful in educating our children - we hope this data breaks down the attendance challenge so that it feels more achievable. 6/6
