I just finished reading your story, Dwayne Betts. Spectacularly written and so important. Congratulations on all the amazing things you've accomplished since I last saw you during your Atlantic internship!

I loved getting to edit this - it's the previously unpublished diary of a Polish-Jewish teenager who was killed by the Nazis. She was an amazing writer, a really different voice and story from Anne Frank's. Her boyfriend tried to save her and wrote the final entries.

This essay by the novelist Dara Horn is jaw-droppingly powerful. She creates a vivid alternative reality - an adult Anne Frank who survived the camps and went on to be a very different writer than any of us would've imagined.

Somehow, whenever I'm editing articles about important topics like curing blindness, there's always a part of the fact-checking process where I need to watch videos of things like Pee-wee Herman dancing with dogs.

"Outrage and negativity are the most 'engaging,' and so that’s what we’re fed [on social media]." So true. It's hard to imagine that just liking other people will be enough to bridge the worst divides we're dealing with now. But if that won't work, I'm not sure if anything will.

My amazing friend and former coworker Rebecca Frankel wrote a book about canine war heroes - and then brought one home to live with her. Here's her dramatic, heartwarming story about Dyngo the dog, complete with adorable pictures. smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/s…

“What we’re looking for is individual difference in elephants—more or less, personality." (Sateesh Venkatesh) Really enjoyed writing this article for Smithsonian Magazine's 50th anniversary issue! smithsonianmag.com/science-nature…
