1/16/24–Ron DeSantis: “I won’t kiss the ring.” 1/21/24–Ron DeSantis kisses the ring It won’t be long before UtahGOP politicians start kissing the ring too. Mike Lee already has, but how long before so-called “moderates” do?

Ahh, the Environmental Stewardship Caucus at the Utah Legislature. They want to make “the world a better place, for our kids & grandkids” by increasing coal production & ignoring climate change. Democrats were specifically banned from being able to join. deseret.com/2024/1/29/2405…

I came up to the Capitol to watch our good legislators work today. The west doors were locked, the south doors were locked, and all but one of the east doors were locked. Quite the metaphor for how they feel about the citizenry participating in the process.

Pretty disappointing that Governor Cox signed two awful bills in the last 24 hours. Good leaders do the right thing, even if it means a harder election. We aren't seeing much of that in Utah. betterutah.org/governor-cox-f…

Fiscally conservative? Interesting to open the The Salt Lake Tribune & read about >$8m in Republican pork projects. From “oil train” litigation to killing trees & wolves on purpose, we need to stop fooling ourselves into believing that Republicans are even remotely fiscally responsible.

This latest poll shows that Governor Cox doesn’t HAVE to be afraid of the MAGA right. Why he has chosen to be is a mystery, but it’s a mystery that is causing a lot of Utahns unnecessary pain. deseret.com/2024/2/2/24050…

Just about everyone has had enough of Natalie Cline. Better Utah is calling for the legislature to remove her from the Utah State Board of Education since she refuses to resign. Sign the petition, then ask everyone you know to sign it too. act.betterutah.org/sign/remove-na…

This is such an under-the-radar waste of state resources. If you don’t know about the Phoenix Correspondence Commission, it’s basically a group of right-wingers who want to rewrite the US Constitution. And Utah lawmakers want to give it $50k. sltrib.com/news/politics/…

Nearly 2,500 people have signed Better Utah’s petition calling for Natalie Cline’s removal from the Utah State Board of Education. Instead, the Legislature will “censure” her for cyberbullying. Huge opportunity lost to hold an elected official accountable. act.betterutah.org/sign/remove-na…

I kind of feel like a kid a few days before Christmas—I am so excited for the 2024 Utah Legislative session to end! We won’t have to live in fear anymore, just sorrow.

Since becoming a senator, Mike Lee has sponsored 1,708 pieces of legislation. Of those, 6 have become law (3 rename federal buildings, two are small land conveyances, and one is a substantive law). Approximately 0.3% of his ideas actually become law.

Jeffrey Merchant (@jeffreymerchant) 's Twitter Profile Photo

MAGA folks say Mike Lee is a hero because he’s only passed 6 bills. That might make sense if he had only introduced 6 bills, but he’s introduced 1,708–over 131 bills PER YEAR since being elected. That isn’t “keep the feds out of our life” behavior—it’s just ineffectiveness.

Today Secretary Anthony Blinken visited Ukraine; Speaker Mike Johnson visited Trump’s criminal trial. One stood with an ally to uphold democracy; the other with a man indicted to overthrow democracy. It’s a stark contrast between where Republicans and Democrats are this election.

Justice Thomas’s wife is a co-conspirator to the 1/6 insurrection, and now we find that Justice Alito is an unabashed “Stop the Steal” supporter. How long would it take Republicans to file impeachment articles if a liberal justice had these kind of ethics? nytimes.com/2024/05/16/us/…

I can’t believe that Governor Cox is STILL trying to convince these MAGA extremists that he is one of them. It is time to get rid of caucus-convention system—and if the Legislature won’t do it, the people should through an initiative process. deseret.com/utah/2024/05/1…

This pretty much sums up the Republican political landscape in Utah right now. The utgop is NOT your parents’ Republican Party, and if you think it is, you’re just fooling yourself.

Honestly, if this had been a Democratic-appointed Justice, impeachment proceedings would have wrapped up months ago. nytimes.com/2024/06/13/us/…

Legislators claiming Utah will be “run like California” & controlled by “big money” because of the Supreme Court’s affirmation of the people’s co-equal right to legislate either have no idea what they’re talking about or just don’t like sharing power w/ the people they “serve.”

Today shows the greatest difference between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. One is in it for the United States of America, the other is in it for himself. Thank you Joe Biden.
