The UCU are striking today to protect 200 jobs and defend our education system. This affects people's lives - austerity is a political choice, not an economic necessity. I’ll be speaking at the Monument at 12 noon along with Jo Grady UCU General Secretary, and Maxine Looby UCU Immediate Past President

If the govt are serious about helping ill and disabled people into work, it starts with treating people as people, not statistics. At the North of Tyne, we showed it works. Here’s some successful case studies. Dignity first - otherwise it’s making the poor pay for the rich.

This is the first Labour govt in history to increase child poverty. There’s an alternative: properly taxing multinational corporations & those with assets over £10 million. Ending disastrous privatisation of energy, water, rail and healthcare. Sign the Dignity Declaration

My letter in the Guardian today on what the leadership of a progressive party needs to do so we have a fighting chance of a decent future. (Hint: end neoliberalism, reverse privatisation, tax the mega-rich, and invest in our common future). theguardian.com/politics/2025/…

Steel is a strategically important industry and must be protected. This is a good first step, but the majority of British people also support public control of rail, mail, energy and water. Majority supports bringing public services into public control. theguardian.com/business/2025/…

On Tuesday, I spoke to a lad called Ryan who told me he would vote Reform. In five minutes I learned he wanted to end homelessness, help poor families, and help vulnerable people get off drugs. Not a word passed his lips about immigration. He just couldn't vote The Labour Party

As Thames Water executives enrich themselves, the water companies they run have failed to build a single new reservoir since 1992. The planning system is often blamed for this sorry state. But there is another 'p' word that explains the failure to build: privatisation. Why?🧵

Labour seem to be debating whether or not bringing thousands of children out of poverty is worth the political capital. Majority believes keeping children fed and warm is much more important.

I’m straight, but for years I’ve flown the Pride flag behind me in every TV interview because I support freedom, tolerance and solidarity.🏳️‍🌈 The decision by the County Durham RefUK administration to take it down signals hostility. Bishop Auckland Pride explains it beautifully.
