Many beaches around the UK will have signs indicating which part of the beach you are closest to. They are exceptionally helpful when we need to locate a casualty. In an emergency, call 999, ask for the Coastguard and quote the number presented on the sign.

Not everyone knows that like the police, fire and ambulance, we’re an emergency service with the same 999 number. If you see someone in trouble in the water or on the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

We have had recent reports of lifesaving equipment being vandalised. Lifebelts can help to save someone's life before we have time to arrive. It is essential that they are kept in top condition for when they are required in a life or death situation. Please look after them.

Did you know there are over 300 coastguard rescue teams around the UK coast, made up of 3,500 volunteers? In their roles as coastguard rescue officers, our local volunteers respond to many types of dangerous incidents, including cliff and mud rescues.

HM Coastguard has introduced new Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for women this year. Senior Coastal Operations Officer Jen Hill explains the benefits behind the two-piece overalls and how they positively enhance the search and rescue experience for female coastguards.
