If the Chancellor is suggesting the new line to Manchester Airport offers better value for money despite higher cost then she must accept HS2 Crewe-Manchester has similar value because the two plans share (I assume) the expensive tunnels under South Manchester.

Once upon a time, when the Testing & Performance Section had to test kit at 125 mph (usually APT), they stuck one of the prototype HST power cars on the end. Here's a hurriedly snatched shot of 975812 (formerly the prototype, 43000) at Derby on 7th June 1980. #ThrowbackThursday

It's time for #FiftyFivesOnFriday again and this week's 1st relic from the loft is this shot of 55008 arriving at Edinburgh light engine from Haymarket, to take over 1E15, the 1425 stopper to Newcastle, Saturday 7th June 1980. Those kids must be in their 50's by now!

Off to teach a session at Loughborough University next week, so here's 45131 on an express for St Pancras, just south of Loughborough station in March 1978. Superb 📷©️ John Woolley Click the link to see his excellent Flickr selection. flickr.com/photos/pics-by…

This week the government quietly published a 'Global biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and national security assessment': gov.uk/government/pub… Meant to be out last year, but rumoured to be blocked by Number 10: theguardian.com/environment/20… The judgements are stomach-churning

There's a new Lords amendment that will give Mayors the power to approve new underground or tram projects instead of waiting 3+ years to get the Transport Secretary to sign off. That means Tracy Brabin could approve the Leeds tram or Sadiq Khan could approve the Bakerloo Line
