1/ Exciting times (potentially) for international HS rail in Europe. After Evolyn & Virgin, we now have - a new open access operator also aiming to compete with Eurostar on Amsterdam-Brussels/Paris/London routes.

I remember my great uncle Fred as a kindly old man when I was small. But he and my grandfather joined the TA in 1938 and commissioned in 1940. Here's Fred during officer training. He would later command C Sqn 48 RTR in Italy. He never wore his full size medals.

While I welcome what appears to be supportive words from the RMT towards solving this dispute, there can be no doubt it has walked back from its red line need to have a strike mandate before talks as this section of a letter to members last April explained…

MoU makes clear that a vote to accept terminates current dispute. This means RMT will enter talks without a strike mandate which was one of its sticking points with last spring’s deal.

Here’s the memorandum of understanding between RMT and RDG. Includes areas of reform to discuss and timeline. It’s shorter than earlier offer so probably has fewer hurdles. If accepted, it gives a pay rise but also shows that reform is not off the table from TOC perspective.

It’s a nice bright day for a spin out to Newhaven with Edinburgh Trams. I wonder if the line will ever go further…

Statement from RDG says it has developed a memorandum of understanding with RMT that will see a referendum vote on accepting a backdated 2022 pay offer and terminating current dispute. Discussions at train operators then start. This is basically what RMT rejected last spring.

Given that Keith Williams consulted widely a few years ago on what became the most recent government plan for rail, this from the rail minister leaves me feeling that the DfT doesn’t know how to solve the problem it has with rail.

SWR Help GWR 📷Here's how it is looking at Hinton Admiral on the South Western Main Line.

SWR Help are still currently able to run through here but services may be disrupted if the water level rises any further.

Two of Alstom UK & Ireland fastest Aventras. 730205 and 730206 on Oxley. Had both out on the mainline and nice to blast up and down the West Coast at 110Mph. Must admit my favourite of the Aventra fleet.
