Thinking about how all the reading models to guide our instruction are predicated on children who experience difficulties learning to read. I think we all should be reading The Balancing Act Dominic Wyse Charlotte Hacking Routledge Eye On Education

When teaching reading there are 3 equally important parts: the student, the teacher, and the text. The criteria used to control texts cannot be governed by anyone outside that circle. Motivation, repeated practice, & an asset lens is key to student success.

With so much focus on literacy instruction, I can't help but think that we are underutilizing poetry. Poetry offers inroads into language that is both foundational and abstract. There are so many great collections of poetry Georgia Heard Amy Ludwig VanDerwater (she/her)

I’ve spent a lot of time discussing Scarborough’s Reading Rope lately- here’s what I wish everyone knew 1⃣ The strands do not develop independently. Growth on one affects growth on others- e.g. improving decoding skills enables readers to ⬆️ their vocabularies by reading text.

Sandy Brumbaum Jenn Hayhurst Dominic Wyse Charlotte Hacking Routledge Eye On Education Mine is on order. I’m a retired primary teacher but still very interested in the literacy teaching space. Now watching my younger grandchildren experiencing SOR and some teachers in the family being mandated to use practices they do not agree with

Thank you, this is our hope. England is about to start its review of the national curriculum. The selection of advisors will indicate much about the likely direction of change. There are important changes needed to how reading and writing are currently mandated.

Want happier, healthier kids? Offer them autonomy. Massive new meta-analysis makes it plain: In every culture, control leaves children worse off — but autonomy helps them people engage, learn, and grow.

What is one commitment you are continuing to do out of inertia, but—if you had the courage to eliminate it—you would immediately benefit from discarding it?

#assessment Incredibly important framing of assessment here🤓 Goes well with this piece from Tom Mahoney open.substack.com/pub/theinterru…

Generally, there is not one straightforward cause of reading and writing difficulties. Every child, has individual needs, resulting in different kinds and degrees of difficulty, which, if not supported by appropriate teaching, will hamper their progress.”

Sean Morrisey Maybe. Having worked for years with young Ss that have difficulty learning to read & write, sometimes the causes can be categorized as similar, but it looks different in every child. What I take from the quote is that we need to be responsive to each child’s strengths & needs.
