This! Honestly, this! I know Estonia's a small country & very different but if we even took on board a small amount of this, in the way we think about students, teachers, the Arts, what achievement is, how it's assoc with wellbeing, we'd be better off. theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2…

Calling interested English teachers to participate in PhD research on the metaphors we use to conceptualise subject English. NATE Team English English & Media Ctr UKLA English Association would really appreciate a retweet. For more information, DM or email.

So it seems a decline in student behaviour has coincided with a period of schools being under-resourced, often under-staffed, and with increased levels of poverty. Correlation is not causation; but ignoring variables is not good research.

CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE! I remember my own excitement last year. UKLA honour all of the shortlistees at the award ceremony, so they’ll make you feel special whatever happens.

And there's a great piece on Shakespeare in April issue of the mag by Philip Smithers, introducing readers to the ideas of the brilliantly aptly named Jane Anger & other 16th c writers with strong views on women's fury & how their ideas relate to Shakespeare's presentation of women.

This is such a helpful and interesting piece by one of our favourite writers, Andrew Green - an overview of ideas about the individual and society in a wide range of Romantic poets. In the April issue of emagazine, online for subscribers now!

I love this piece in April emag, by AL teacher Harriet Parks. It's right up my street! A superb monologue in the voice of Miranda in The Tempest & a commentary explaining her decisions. Then, the icing on the cake – in emagplus, her students' own terrific writing & commentaries.

It's wonderful to get excellent examples of student writing that we can publish in emagazine. This comparative piece by Farzana Omar, in the April issue, is an excellent handling for the NEA of two very interesting contemporary novels.

We've noticed that sometimes more independent & grammar school students enter than others. We want EVERY student to have the chance to take part & win, regardless of their school/college. And winners have come from every type of school. So please tell YOUR students about it!

We run this competition every year, to support the development of close reading – a key aspect of Eng Lit study. The winning writing is then a great resource for teachers to use as models of excellent writing in the subject. Support it by encouraging your students to enter!

The judge is Prof Nicolas Tredell. The extract gives students lots to think & write about – the opening of D.H. Lawrence's 'The Rainbow'. The winner gets a cash prize & is published in the mag. Two runners-up get a cash prize & are published online. A great thing for CVs.

In the April emag & online you'll find details of our annual Close Reading Competition, launching now, closing 17 May. We're keen to get students' own responses, not taught ones, so all it needs is for you to share this with students & suggest they enter. englishandmedia.co.uk/emc-magazines/

Thinking about the teaching of poetry today, I'm reminded of this article I wrote for Magma Poetry in Spring 2023. One year on, I feel even more strongly about what poetry teaching in school English can – and should – be! magmapoetry.com/archive/magma-…
