I lived in #Paris in the 90s. A city totally dominated by cars. Hard to walk in, a nightmare to ride a bike in. Look at it now: a city where cars, rather than people, have trouble moving. Which, in the overheated, hurricane-plagued 2020s, is how a city *should* look.

Worth noting that this scenario - Cons largest party, but well short of a majority and with no friends in the Commons therefore not getting into govt - is an *unattainable ideal case scenario* involving *winning every 2024 ReformUK voter* and *losing nobody*. That won't happen.

Fancy buying a ‘machine-generated literature review’ of digital geographies for €192.59? Just stumbled across this book. So many questions related to audience, editor, publisher, scholarship, academic integrity, etc. link.springer.com/book/978981974…

UK doctoral training programmes now expect PhD researchers to submit within 3 years *and* spend 3 months of that on a placement. UKHE needs to touch a lot of grass.

This is the table display of Boris Johnson’s memoir at the Cheltenham Literature Festival tonight. Waterstones staff keep cleaning it up. But then festival goers keep doing it again! ⁦Cheltenham Festivals

I and twenty-two other Nobel economists (with a wide range of views on other topics) co-signed this letter in support of Kamala Harris, who will be a far better steward of our economy than Donald Trump. Thanks to Joseph E. Stiglitz for leading on this. cnn.com/2024/10/23/pol…

A UK judge sentenced 5 climate activists to 21 years in jail for *planning* to block a London road to demand climate action. What should Big Oil CEOs get for this?

The bottom line: Brexit is Britain's most significant economic policy. And it is costing a fortune. A budget that does nothing about Brexit can't hope to "fix the foundations" of anything.

But the wider pay outlook is dire. Higher inflation / weaker growth from increased taxes on employment + challenging outlook = real pay stagnating again in the middle of this Parliament. By 2028 real wages are expected to have grown by just £13 a week over the past two decades.

Nadine Dorries supports Independent Schools fighting the VAT levy legally. However they’re fighting it by appealing to the ECHR, which Nads wants to abolish! Is this dichotomy a problem for Nads? OF COURSE NOT! It’s what made her such a great Tory Minister. I miss her!😔 #GoNads

OUTRAGEOUS: The Government could bow to pressure from building companies to weaken a promise that new houses will be built with solar panels. Sign the petition demanding the Government stick to its guns: you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/comp… via 38 Degrees
