Alaa Abd El-Fattah is a British citizen & democratic activist who is currently imprisoned by the Egyptian Government in awful conditions. I asked the Foreign Secretary to commit to making a statement at the upcoming UN Human Rights Council session to condemn Alaa’s imprisonment.

It’s been over a year since Rishi Sunak met with President Sisi at #COP27 to urgently discuss Alaa’s case following an outpouring of international support. A few days later Alaa collapsed and almost died in his cell after a 200 day hunger strike protesting his unjust imprisonment

A year on, there has been no progress and Alaa remains separated from his son and loved ones. The government acts as if this isn’t a long time.

We've come a long way. From Alaa coming close to death, to a place where he has a little bit of hope and is fighting to live. Alaa today feels more connected to the outside world, and that connection was made possible thanks to solidarity. We need to keep going until we #FreeAlaa
