But it needs saying: Adoptive mothers are mothers. Lesbian mothers are mothers, whether they birthed the child or not. Step mothers are mothers. Trans women can be mothers. It's not up to an MP or anyone else to march into a family & enforce what a child calls their parent.

Why is the UK Ambassador telling British holidaymakers #Egypt is safe when he KNOWS the UK can't guarantee consular access to British citizens caught in Egypt's terrifying prison system & 100+ MPs & Lords have urged the Foreign Sec to change the #TravelAdvice accordingly?

Alaa Abd El-Fattah is a British citizen & democratic activist who is currently imprisoned by the Egyptian Government in awful conditions. I asked the Foreign Secretary to commit to making a statement at the upcoming UN Human Rights Council session to condemn Alaa’s imprisonment.

💥Alaa was raised in parliament today: thank you Vicky Foxcroft 💙 for holding Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office accountable & demanding Foreign Sec James Cleverly🇬🇧 make a statement on Alaa at the upcoming Human Rights Council session in September. What’s needed now is real action from the govt #FreeAlaa

Rishi Sunak has been urged to deliver on a promise to get jailed British writer Alaa Abd el-Fattah released from an Egyptian prison, where he has been denied access to a lawyer or the British consulate. Click below for the story 🔗 trib.al/8jPssEV

It’s been one year since the dramatic events of #COP27, yet Alaa still remains behind bars One year since Rishi Sunak told us he wanted to see Alaa "reunited with his family as soon as possible" We need action now to #FreeAlaa. Email your MP here: tinyurl.com/46ha9jjc #COP28

It’s been over a year since Rishi Sunak met with President Sisi at #COP27 to urgently discuss Alaa’s case following an outpouring of international support. A few days later Alaa collapsed and almost died in his cell after a 200 day hunger strike protesting his unjust imprisonment

A year on, there has been no progress and Alaa remains separated from his son and loved ones. The government acts as if this isn’t a long time.

We've come a long way. From Alaa coming close to death, to a place where he has a little bit of hope and is fighting to live. Alaa today feels more connected to the outside world, and that connection was made possible thanks to solidarity. We need to keep going until we #FreeAlaa

Since Alaa’s re-arrest in September 2019 Lord David Cameron will be the fourth Foreign Secretary in charge. If you're in the UK, please consider writing to your MP here to call on them to demand his release freealaa.net/take-action-mp #FreeAlaa #COP27 #COP28

Ex-British envoy to Egypt John Casson fascinating on how UK diplomacy fails in middle east. Said eg Rishi Sunak’s efforts to secure the release of jailed British writer Alaa Abd El-Fattah have been “a textbook case” of how to do all the wrong things to put effective pressure on

We are still waiting for the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention's (UNWGAD) report on Alaa's imprisonment. Today 27 freedom of expression and human rights organisations, coordinated by English PEN, have written to UNWGAD, pressing for more urgency. englishpen.org/posts/campaign…
