Detail from one of my favourite armours (c. 1598). It belonged to Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton, a great scholar and art enthusiast as well as Shakespeare's only acknowledged patron. Fashion and steel at its finest. II.360, Royal Armouries. #armsandarmour #history
#Sword, c.1375-1430, Italian, one of a group of about 75 swords that were possibly a tribute payment or war booty from Cyprus to Egypt. The Arabic inscription dates it to about 1432 (836 IC). A wonderful example of the complicated lives of arms. IX.950, Royal Armouries #history
Dutch cuirassier armour c.1620-30, originally silvered and gilt. This armour was probably presented to Tokugawa Hidetada the Shogun of Japan c.1639 and brought back to Europe by the Italian ambassador in 1850. II.263 Royal Armouries #armsandarmour #history #armour #japan #gift
One of the latest public talks at the Royal Armouries is on shield-maidens and is simply awesome! Love watching presentations that are both entertaining and though-provoking. #Vikings #shieldmaiden #armsandarmour #history #womeninhistory #Leeds
Excellent paper by Dr Jacob H. Deacon on English fencing masters of the 16th c. and the weapons they used, at the #WeaponsInSociety conference hosted by the Royal Armouries. #armsandarmour #History #militaryhistory
Incredibly interesting topic by Samantha Nelson at the #WeaponsInSociety conference organized by the Royal Armouries, addressing the military obligations of noblewomen in 16th England. #armsandarmour #history #nobility
This Saturday at 12.30 I'm giving a presentation at the Royal Armouries that combines two of my favourite topics. To attend book a free ticket. Lots of cool fantasy-themed activities and demos. #rpg #TTRPGs #dungeonsanddragons #professionalnerd #Leeds royalarmouries.org/event/fantasy-…
Cataloguing some Trophies of Arms in store Royal Armouries The Tower of London today. This one, from the White Tower, is decorated with an arrangement of screws from firearms. I can’t believe that the screw heads are stamped with teeny, tiny Broad Arrows!
And here’s what you’ve been waiting for… drumroll please: #Museums2024 will be held on 12-14 November 2024 at Royal Armouries in lovely, lovely Leeds! ⚔️ Thanks again everybody — we’ll see you at the next one 👋 #Museums2023
