Dear #twitterstorians, I’m looking for reading suggestions that discuss private household armouries in early modern England. Any historians of the household, nobility, or military be able to help? Any suggestions would be extremely welcome! Diolch ☺️

Over the next week or so, we'll be tweeting out objects related to papers in our upcoming conference. Like this basket-hilted sword, of the sort that might have been carried by the Elizabethan Company of Masters of Defence covered by Institute for Medieval Studies Dr Jacob H. Deacon

Manchester Metropolitan Uni Samantha Nelson's forthcoming paper will explore the role of Tudor women in furnishing soldiers with arms and armour - perhaps like this mid-16th century pauldron and vambrace from a demilance armour (III.1710), once part of the Earl of Pembroke's arsenal.

OTD 1600 George Carew captured Glin castle. After battering a breach, Carew's men stormed in, leading to vicious close-quarter fighting in the narrow hallways. Denied mercy, the small garrison fought to the last on the wall tops and gutters on the roof of the keep #nineyearswar
