This. This is the biggest barrier to a safer climate and a safer planet for our kids. The oil & gas industry first denying climate change and now flooding our feeds and minds with disinformation about EV’s, solar & wind. 🧵1/3 theguardian.com/us-news/2024/a…

Wise words from Professor Rod Sims.
“If we’re not measuring our emissions properly, how can we deal with them?
Australia should be measuring actual emissions from specific locations and not using averages based on decades-old industry data'

An aging marine biologist inspects a giant old coral that’s fighting for its life due to anthropogenic heating.

Surrounding it are stands of recently dead and dying staghorn corals, for as far as the eye can see.

This is what mass-mortality looks like. theguardian.com/environment/20…

Akshat Rathi Saul Griffith Indeed. ~40% of all cargo carried by international shipping is fossil fuels: coal, oil, and, increasingly, LNG. Shipping consumes ~5% of global oil consumption & emits ~1.05 billion tons CO2/y. So 2% of all global oil consumption is used for international shipping of fossil…

Can we get real about cobalt? This is a map of artisanal mining sites in Democratic Republic of the Congo. 64% of the 3400 artisanal mining sites are for gold (IPIS).

Out of 470 000 diggers, 302 000 mines gold, 95 000 cassiterite, 56 000 copper, and 44 thousand cobalt.

Thread: Each week I run a simulation of Australia’s main electricity grid using rescaled generation data to show that it can get very close to 100% renewable electricity with just 5 hrs of storage (24 GW / 120 GWh)
Results:
last week: 99.4% RE
last 139 weeks: 99.1% RE (1/5)

Based on first three months of the year and the current El Nino / La Nina forecast, we expect 2024 to be similar to or slightly warmer than 2023. With only 3 months in we can't know precisely where the year will end up, but its virtually certain to be at least the 2nd warmest:

A reminder that Australian east coast gas demand is dominated by exports.
In the last quarter, 85% of east coast gas was exported, 11% was for domestic commercial, industrial & residential use while 5% was for gas generators.

Today, the International Energy Agency has started tracking progress of all 10 things that every country in the world committed to at COP28 UAE.

You can't say there's no ambition!?... 🧵

In short, any time someone suggests that we should slow or halt the rollout of renewables & instead focus on nuclear, ask them how they plan to fill the gap between the phaseout of coal & the start of nuclear, & how cumulative emissions under their plan will compare to AEMO's ISP

I often hear people insisting that modern warming is part of the same natural cycle that took as out of the last 'ice age'. Here's why that's wrong...

How much of global warming is human-caused?

MORE THAN 100%

That’s right: according to natural factors, including the sun and natural cycles, the Earth should be slowly, gradually cooling right now. Instead, it’s warming.

The Australian government has quietly released the map of mass coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef this summer, confirming that the 5th event in just 8 years is the most severe & the most widespread ever.

This time, only the far north has escaped.

In Australia’s North, the Great Barrier Reef just suffered its worst ever bleaching.

In the West, forests & bushland are dying, with risk of “forest collapse.” Like coral bleaching on land.

This is climate change. We must act urgently to save our home
