There once was an org called CSIRO
A place where the best ideas flow
They invented WiFi
Aerogard to repel fly
They're helping Australia grow.

Since we don't have a Poets Department (tortured or otherwise) we had to put the call out to all our staff for their best science poetry.

Framing climate action as a cost is misleading

A cost is when extreme weather causes damage and you have to repair it

Spending money to avoid the damage in the first place, however, is an investment

Climate action is an investment in a safer future, and cheap at any price

Thus podcast is a thinly veiled excuse to talk with my friends and meet some of the coolest people on the planet. I've had a bunch of incredible interviews this year already and get to talk to one of my very favorite humans this afternoon!

Note that this is not talking about plastic pollution, when plastic containers are discarded. It’s primarily talking about the emissions produced by creating the plastic.

This is why, in the US with the exception of the Northeast corridor, taking the train can actually generate MORE carbon than flying. Read: nytimes.com/2024/04/04/cli…

Sadly, today - two years on - I see this argument being made by climate advocates as well as fossil fuel advocates. And who wins, when we make the perfect the enemy of the good?

You spend your 40s thinking 'hey, maybe aging isn't so bad, I'm enjoying my kids & my family, I'm still pretty fit & limber, I've got this' & then you hit 50 & your kids leave & your body falls apart & any illusion of control is crushed into dust.

How's your day going?

New research published in Nature today finds that we are on track for climate damages worth $38 trillion per year by 2050. This is a staggering figure. The damages are projected to be worth 6x more than the mitigation costs of limiting global warming to 2C.

To add to the Dubai story, even subseasonal (long range) models forecast a wet period specifically in this region. Again, cloud seeding may be a “sexy” story but it had little, if anything to do with the rain event. People are so desensitized that they need a sensational story.
