Came across an old nemesis today- Lantana camara. Used as ornamental, pretty and pampered, here in BC, Canada, but a noxious invader in many parts of the world! I spent my early career in South Africa doing research into biocontrol of this difficult weed😁

The hunt for the harlequin ladybird (Harmonia axyridis) is on by Plant & Food Research Motueka team members. The work is part of a Bragato Research Institute project for New Zealand Wine developing efficient #monitoring systems for this NZ new #insect species to understand its dispersal and #Behaviour.

Very sad to hear of Stefan Neser’s passing. A true legend in the global weed biocontrol world who’s accomplishments in South Africa will last far beyond any of our lives and those of our great grandchildren. Not many people leave a legacy like that. RIP

Invasive bug alert! Possible spotted Lantern fly sighting near the border. Send any reports to the CFIA. Essential info for the report includes: location (GPS or address), collecting the specimen into a sealable container (if not, clear photos are OK) tinyurl.com/cfsxk9fr

The invasive agricultural pest Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) MAY have been found in Omak WA. This is a big deal for BC agriculture! SLF is known to decrease fruit yield, and crop plant health in orchards and vineyards in eastern USA and the #Okanagan wine region could be impacted. 1/n

You (2): So what ELSE can you do? Tell your friends, tell your grandpa, tell your neighbour's hairdresser that if they find a Spotted Lanternfly in BC they should collect it in a sealable container (or take a good pic), note the exact location and send it to Canadian Food Inspection Agency. 13/n

Conclusion: We (Dr Chandra Moffat 🐞🌿 she/her, Hester Williams, @tyler_nelz) in the Summerland Biocontrol Lab will be watching for this invasive fruit pest in #BeautifulBC. We hope you will too! 14/14

Zambia has had a long history of controlling Salvinia molesta, #KaribaWeed through #biocontrol with the first release in 1990. However the weed has come back with vengeance on the #KafueRiver. The CBC sent a package of Cyrtobagous salviniae that were released on 28 October 2021.
