Just came across a case where a man got a 20-year prison sentence for a single theft. You can swing a dead cat in Alabama and find cases like this. Our prisons are overcrowded because we over-punish. The time people get here is astronomical.

When you have a criminal system full of injustices there is no justice.

In almost 25 years in criminal defense working on only serious felonies & capital cases. I’ve never had a client’s family not support them & that’s because people are so much more than their crime & the sooner we recognize that the sooner we will end mass incarceration…

When incarcerated individuals call & sound defeated & the phones hang up you can’t help but feel defeated too! Those interrupted conversation don’t help anyone especially not the individual who is hurting who needed to hear the ❤️ on the other end of the phone...

Just one person’s incarceration impacts countless individuals in a negative way. Regardless of what “side” you are on no-one wins when you cage & dehumanize people.

Incarceration is harmful to those we cage. It’s harmful to those who work in the system. It’s harmful to families & communities. It’s harmful to each one of us whether you want to acknowledge it or not the only ones left unharmed are those profiting off their own inhumanity.

Prices in the prison commissary went up again. They’ve gone up 4 times in 5 months. Some things have almost tripled. Pay has been $.55/hour for decades. I don’t know how prisoners with no outside support can do it anymore. Nothing in prison is free.

All jails & courthouses should have free parking. We don’t need to profit off people already struggling in any capacity when it comes to the criminal justice system.

The moment someone is arrested that’s the second you start providing programs, therapy, & services. Having incarcerated individuals sit in jail cells for months, years with nothing to do especially not providing books & music is inhumane.

Long prison sentences don’t reform or rehabilitate, they break the spirit beyond repair, then cast you out into a world you don’t recognize and can’t survive in. If prisons must exist, we must reimagine their purpose

Police in Columbus, Ohio shot and killed an unarmed black man who was laying in bed today. They shot him within one second of opening the bedroom door. His name Donovan Lewis.

The Death Penalty & LWOP are not about justice they are political sentences that are inhumane & cause further harm to countless individuals. No-one heals when we continue to decide to hurt one another in the name of justice.
