At the Murrins today doing peat depth surveys for Ulster Wildlife 🌈 Every time I’ve surveyed here I’ve had rainbows…Something a bit magical about the place! Less than magical to walk on…worst bog I’ve had the displeasure of walking across in parts!🤣 my poor knees/ankles!

This is an exciting LIFE IP Wild Atlantic Nature initiative to provide an opportunity for local groups of farmers & landowners in the northwest to get support to develop proposals for larger blanket bog-related projects. Generously funded by Lifes2good Foundation

Came across this spot in Antrim the other day, was mapped as a small upland lough on the 1832 maps. A noticeable drain or straightened stream can be seen at the S end, look at the area now in 2023! Not a lough anymore, just eroded blanket bog! Ulster Wildlife IUCN UK Peatlands #peatlands

I’ve yet to meet a farmer who thinks this is a good scheme! Perhaps I am wrong but it’s taking a lot of £ out of NI Agri support budget ⁦Ulster Farmers' Union⁩ ⁦Nature Friendly Farming Network⁩ ⁦Farming Life⁩ ⁦Irish Farmers Journal⁩ ⁦DAERA⁩ bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northe…

See these stone dams being put to the test post-heavy rain 🌧️ Their permeable structure facilitates slower water flow, reducing the intensity of river inflow. Any eroded peat or sediment is also caught behind them allowing vegetation such as #sphagnum moss to build up 🪨💧

It's fantastic to see the shallow pools of water, created by #peatlandrestoration works on Exmoor, filling up with incredible peat-forming sphagnum mosses only 6 months on from when they were created.
