All social media oligopolists, not just TikTok, should open their recommendation algorithms to scrutiny. They are programming our minds and our societies.

Part of the reason why the public has lost so much trust in science is because experts have made claims with so much certainty and refused to apologize or make amends when those claims turn out to be wrong. Most, if not all, research begins with acknowledging uncertainty.

No one familiar with the history of World War II can be that surprised by what the Russians did in Bucha. The barbarism of the Red Army is omitted from the history American kids learn. The Russians were allies, and thus "the good guys." But this is part of a long tradition.
