Previously, WCS Ocean Giants team documented that bottlenose dolphins live in the busy waters off New York and New Jersey from spring to fall. They spend a lot of their time here feeding, suggesting that these animals may be drawn to this area to “dine."

THIS WEEK: Aerial surveys of the #HudsonCanyon area in the #NewYorkBight by NOAA remarkably spotted roughly 10% (35 individuals) of the world’s Critically Endangered North Atlantic right whale population. Also surveyed were fin whales (8) and, not often seen, sei whales (31).

Great news! We just deployed 7 acoustic recorders as part of a NYS Energy Research and Development Authority-funded New York Bight (NYB) passive acoustic monitoring project. We are monitoring for whale and ocean noise within the NYB offshore wind lease areas. What we learn will help with management decisions.

It’s prime time for whale watching in New York, writes Gothamist. “People are now becoming more accustomed and more familiar with seeing whales and seeing dolphins off of our shores,” says WCS’s Howard Rosenbaum. gothamist.com/news/its-prime…

This winter, the @WCSOcean Giants team retrieved and redeployed 6 acoustic monitoring instruments for a two-year project, supported by NYS Energy Research and Development Authority. The data helps create baseline info on marine mammal species and ocean noise in offshore wind lease areas, guiding best practices.

Our WCS-Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) acoustic monitoring buoys picked up North Atlantic right whales in NY Bight yesterday. This triggers slow zones, crucial to protect the whales. bit.ly/4aQNo7v Last week in this area, NOAAFish_NEFSC saw a mother (Accordion, #4150) with her first calf.

For 10 years, @WCSOcean Giants has studied whales in the NY Bight. Our team gathers data that is used to better protect these animals. These shots are from a recent ‘close approach’ by a curious humpback that circled & remained close to the boat for some time. #WorldWhaleDay

Life is booming in the New York Bight. The WCS Ocean Giants team saw fin whales, humpbacks, and common dolphins all feeding together. At the surface, two different pectoral fins emerged, a side-lunging fin whale and a fin-slapping humpback. A feeding frenzy on a fave prey type.
