Dolphins are at top of the food chain and can act as canaries of these waterways. Their well-being may be indicator of ecosystem health. Continued monitoring of this population may serve as important indicator of dolphin & ecosystem health & resilience in heavily-used waters.

New WCS published study found more than half of the 200+ dolphins assessed have skin lesions—a possible sign of disease or other health issues, but more work is needed to understand what’s going on.

Previously, @WCSOcean Giants team documented that bottlenose dolphins live in the busy waters off New York and New Jersey from spring to fall.

They spend a lot of their time here feeding, suggesting that these animals may be drawn to this area to “dine.'
