Our snow measurements in front of the landslide deposits indicated above-average snow water equivalent. Good News at least for the in Eastern Switzerland this year

What a great day on Findel for GLAMOS measurements of winter snow accumulation. And a privilege to work in this beautiful but fragile environment!
Much better situation than in the last two years, even though not exceptional for the region relative to long-term mean

Glacier measurements at their best: probing snow depth at 4000 masl on a windy and crystal clear morning.
Our GLAMOS VAW Glaciology snow water equivalent monitoring on Allalin today showed surprisingly little snow at high elev., but decent snow on the glacier tongue

de la Plaine Morte today for GLAMOS fieldwork. Saharan dust once again made the scene!
Exceptionally warm weather with melting at almost 3000 masl already in the morning.
Snow cover is decent with 4-5m, even though not exceptional

The GLAMOS VAW Glaciology measurement season is on! 🤩
Today we conducted snow depth and density measurements on Great . A long but beautiful traverse from top to bottom.
Good snow conditions this year (2-5m) even though I would have expected more...

Swiss are having a good time this winter! Despite high temperatures + very little snow at low elevation, snow on glaciers is abundant at the moment.
(GLAMOS VAW Glaciology real-time automated observations)
Better data soon with the onset of our late-winter surveys

Yesterday, I had the pleasure to chat one hour with Tina Nägeli
on radio SRF about 'What if all were gone?'.
Lots of impact - near and far. The Alps, our home would (will!) change in appearance.
Full length in Swiss German here:

The snow situation on in the Northern Swiss Alps is exceptionally good for the season!
GLAMOS VAW Glaciology real-time observations at a few sites, combined with modelling indicate a substantially above-average current state of glaciers. Let's hope for more ❄️!!

First update on the state of Swiss during the new season 2023/2024. After continued and substantial meltdown in early October, snow accumulation has started. Good conditions for the early season in the West, a bit less in other regions

Data based local automated real-time observations combined with distributed modelling. Cumulative daily glacier mass balance for the present year is shown in the context of the 2010-2020 average, and the extreme years 2022 and 2023 (thin lines)

Looks like the summer of 2023 is a never-ending story. Bad luck for of the Alps. No snow, dying ice...
Another excursion for GLAMOS end-of-season measurements today to Griesgletscher. In the last two years melting is simply beyond the scale!

Today, 1 Oct, start into the new year 2023/2024. The race is reset. Really curious what the next period will bring after the incredible losses we've experienced in the last two years.
A bit closer to the already very negative decadal average?
We'll keep you updated!

This short clip shows the situation on the Great Glacier. 11 metres of melted in the last 2 years (2022-2023) at the Konkordiaplatz, while the average ice thickness

What were the causes for the high mass loss 2023?
1) extremely dry winter!
2) very warm summer!
3) melting until November
Slightly mitigated by:
4) abundant snow fall (only) in April
5) a few snow events in August
