Last week group members Christophe Ogier & Raphael Moser teamed up with PSI Paul Scherrer Institut for fieldwork at the summit of Mont Collon and Alphubel. The aim: to date the site's oldest ice and to investigate the past glacier coverage at high elevation. 🔍⛺️⛷️

⚠️On the morning of April 14, Tschierva Glacier was impacted by a large rock which originated from Piz Scerscen 🏔️at around 3300m and ran about 5km into the Roseg valley! Thankfully, no reports of missing persons 🤞Photo credit: Silvan Leinss

In this paper led by Ian Delaney Université de Lausanne, we use a long-term record of suspended sediment concentrations at Fieschertal, to infer on the temporal dynamics of subglacial and proglacial sediment transport. Check out the full manuscript at doi.org/10.1029/2023WR…

The first-ever VAW-GL PhD retreat was a success! The doctoral students spent a long weekend in Kandersteg enjoying time together in the snow & sun, having productive discussions about work-related topics, and playing a fun & informative round of PowerPoint karaoke! 🏔️❄️

The 2023-24 winter was the mildest in Switzerland since the beginning of measurements in 1864, the snow coverage in higher altitude areas is at pre-industrial levels. climatologist C. Marty helps us understand why it can snow even in mild winters.
