Humanitarians are among the most worried by the discussions taking place at this year’s Munich Security Conference. We see the world from the perspective of those most impacted by crises. We know that less international cooperation means more lives lost, more misery, more insecurity for all.

An appeal to European leaders from a lifetime humanitarian: as you discuss boosting defense spending please don’t overlook humanitarian aid, which faces devastating cuts. Aid, too, is about keeping your countries safe. Aid promotes stability. And a stable world is a safer world.

Media are largely silent on this topic. Nobody mentions it in political debates. Millions of lives worldwide are being affected by brutal cuts in international aid. Soon we will see more people die unnecessarily, children go hungry, and many move on, desperately seeking help.

The silence is deafening. Women and children will suffer the most from brutal aid cuts—more hunger, more loss, more desperation. Where has our solidarity gone? #AidMatters

Brutal financing cuts in humanitarian aid are not a funding shortfall. They are a crisis of responsibility. Millions of innocent people are at risk. The cost of inaction will be measured in more instability and in many lost lives. My statement 👇🏻 unhcr.org/news/press-rel…

“I feel like algorithms have stolen my voice" At #EHF2025, our Gisella Lomax 🇺🇳 warned that mis/disinformation + hate speech are driving real harm against refugees & humanitarians. With EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid 🇪🇺's support, UNHCR launched a toolkit to respond. Check it out: unhcr.org/handbooks/info…

Congratulations, António Costa, for receiving the UNESCO 🏛️ #Education #Sciences #Culture 🇺🇳 Houphouët-Boigny peace prize. A well deserved recognition! I am most grateful to António Costa for donating the prize funds to UNHCR. They will be used to support education projects for people affected by war in Sudan.

I join United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in calling for restraint and de-escalation in the Iran/Israel war. Civilians — Iranians and Israelis — must be spared. We at UNHCR think of the people of Iran, long-time hosts of Afghan refugees and now facing devastation and fear.

I feel a mix of horror, anger and a need for action - how can this be? À child raped every 30 min. This type of violence is simply grotesque. Where is humanity?

In Dara’a, I witnessed the return of Syrian refugees from Jordan. I was humbled by their brave choice to rebuild their lives in a place devastated by war. As one of them said, “we return because we love our country”. UNHCR works with the authorities in supporting returnees.
