OTD in 2017, a M5.3 EQ with a shallow depth struck just south of Kadavu Island, on the Hunter Fracture Zone - an active seismic area. This event was widely felt on Kadavu and in the Suva-Nausori corridor. Historically, this region has produced many damaging events M6+.

Many don’t realise but Fiji experiences several earthquakes of varying magnitudes and depths on a daily basis. Over the last 24 hours, at least 10 events have been recorded on my Raspberry Shake within the Fiji region. Most are small and/or deep, thus not felt.

A shallow M6.4 earthquake occurred about 480km SW of Fiji at 1:28pm FJT and poses no threat to Fiji. By looking at past seismicity of the area (R) it is evident this is a very active area with at least 22 M6+ and 2 M7+ earthquakes in the last 100 years. Recorded on my Raspberry Shake

30 April #Ruang volcanic eruption plume of sulfur dioxide now extends beyond 3000 km over SE Asia. The eruption is the 2nd largest this century & emitted 1.3 million metric tons of SO2. Global climatic changes would need around 5 million tons. A larger eruption risk remains.

Very hot day across Fiji today due to northerly winds. Temps into the high 30s and real feel temps between 45°C-50°C in many places.

Parts of Rakiraki/Saivou districts felt several tremors today - largest a ~M3.0 at 10:29am. These are small, shallow tremors which result in them being felt nearby. This region has felt regular tremors since 2023, signaling a seismic swarm. Recorded on my Raspberry Shake in Volivoli

A shallow M2.9 earthquake occurred near Naqara Island & was felt between Navua to Suva at 9:34am today. This area has been studied previously and a major fault - the Naqara fault - has been identified. This area is also where the 1953 Suva earthquake originated.
