Meachum was forced to disband the Candle Tallow School but later, he outfitted a steamboat with a library, desks, and chairs and opened the Floating Freedom School in the middle of the Mississippi, outside the reach of Missouri officials.

On this day in 1875, A.P Ashbourne received a patent for his invention, the Biscuit Cutter. It consisted of a board to roll the biscuits out on, which was hinged to a metal plate with various biscuit cutter shapes mounted to it.

George McLaurin, the first black man admitted to the University of Oklahoma in 1948 was forced to sit in a corner far from his classmates. When he first applied he was denied based on his race. He went to court & it ruled that denying him was unconstitutional
