Wow! Just watched S6 E13 of Deep Space Nine, Far Beyond the Stars. It’s a marvelous tour de force from everyone involved. Simply one of finest episodes of storytelling in the entire Trek canon. #bydhttmwfi

The Advent season has many rich and ancient hymns of its own - songs of prophecy, hope, light and life springing up in the dead of winter. Here's one example: some medieval English versions of the beautiful evening hymn, 'Creator of the stars of night' aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/2013/12/condit…

The ‘Pilgrim Hare’ from St. Mary’s Church in Beverley, East Yorkshire. Dating to the mid-14th century, the hare is dressed as a pilgrim, hence the title. It is thought that the carving was the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s White Rabbit. 📸 My own. #StoneworkSunday

'O Earendel, brightest of angels, sent to mankind over middle-earth...' It's the winter solstice, when the medieval church sang 'O Oriens' - a prayer for light in darkness. It inspired an Anglo-Saxon poem, which in turn inspired Tolkien's myth of Eärendil aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-an…

Tonight is the eve of May Day, an especially magical time of year. It's said that on May Eve in Herefordshire, early in the last century, 'folk used to put trays of moss outside their doors for the fairies to dance upon'.

Today is Plough Monday, the first Monday after Epiphany. This was traditionally the first day back at work after the Christmas holiday, and it was celebrated by blessing tools of work - a way of starting off the new year well, but also an excuse for some last Christmas festivity!
