The #IPCC #ClimateReport has just been approved!! 🙌 16 days, capped off with a final ~40hrs straight of line-by-line negotiation & approval. As one of the authors of the report, this moment culminates years of work. Congratulations to all the authors, Chairs and delegates 🎉

The IPCC report on how to tackle climate change is finally out, covering nearly 3,000 pages

Look out tomorrow for Carbon Brief in-depth summary

Here are some highlights

1/ Global GHG emissions are at highest ever level, but growth has slowed

It's a landmark report. But this "now or never" framing is behind the curve. 90% of global emissions are covered by net zero targets. We'll land somewhere between 1.5-2C. We're already into the era of managing tradeoffs, en route. aljazeera.com/news/2022/4/4/…

Pretty decent takeaways. Sounds like the report is short of some text on how to manage trade-offs. I see a lot of those coming up. Like where the cuts fall between sectors.

Paraphrasing: “There is a group-level commitment to capturing 10MT CO2 by 2030. There are something like 80 years of capacity at 10MT a year into the gas field. Storage capacity isn’t something we have to worry about.” constructionnews.co.uk/news/cement-gi…

Panasonic got its highest-emitting Chinese factory to “virtually net zero” carbon dioxide. It took six years, showing how difficult it can be for companies to reduce their environmental footprints to deal with climate change. Phred Dvorak

This is incredibly out of touch. The aim is to get to net zero and increase welfare. Not to get to net zero at any cost. Transition people, don't suddenly halt stuff. Some of this "infrastructure" will also transport green fuels and be used for carbon removals.

So if you're a fan of renewable energy, you'll like the UK's new Energy Strategy: 💨50GW of offshore wind by 2030 💨Up to 5GW of floating wind ☀️5-fold increase in solar by 2035 💚At least 5GW of green hydrogen by 2030 💨More onshore wind Little thread on details/significance

New visualization alert! Watch global temperature changes from 1880 to 2021 by latitude zone. As you can see, global warming isn't uniform around the planet, and the Arctic has been warming much faster than other regions. Learn more and download the video: climate.nasa.gov/climate_resour…

The IPCC report makes it clear that limiting warming to well-below 2C requires "immediate and deep" greenhouse gas reductions in all sectors. But they also feature carbon dioxide reduction as a "key element" to reach achieve these goals. Lets explore CDR in the WG3 report! 1/

It's just 3 years - almost to the day - since the first airline committed to net zero emissions. Now the entire industry and 193 countries are onboard. The pace of change is fast. The 15% net reduction between 2019-30 is in line with what NDCs will deliver, I believe. Onwards..
