1/Wintering seabirds in the Baltic Sea have suffered significant declines in recent decades. At least 76 000 seabirds in the Baltic are victim to bycatch in gillnets each year. Improved data collection is key to better understand+find solutions to tackle bycatch #FishSesh2 #WSTC7

Thank you Robert Blackmore, that was really interesting! I'm sure people will be interested in knowing more about this, if you have any questions at this time direct them to Robert using also the #WSTC7 #FishSesh2 hashtags!

It was graduate student/post-doc Jeff Hutchings +deposed DFO Research scientist Ram Myers who stood and called out the DFO bureaucracy in its misinformation actions and campaign in the unprecedented and unnecessary demise of the northern cod. They stood out and they stood alone.

1/4 #WSTC8 #LightSesh #lightattraction has been exhibited by many seabirds & may be contributing to the Leach’s Storm-Petrel population decline. #Stormpetrels amass around light and can subsequently strand on-land, making them vulnerable to starvation, injury, & predation.

(2/6) To generate an informed hypothesis, I first looked at the bill’s characteristics. Specifically, I assessed the lability and condition-dependence of color across the breeding season to ask whether this trait aligns more with a #quality or #identity signal. #AnimBehav2023

Power down for Petrels! Faculty of Science, Memorial University Student Tori Burt presented her study PacificSeabirdGroup’ 2023 annual conference in San Diego, CA, finding that turning off lights significantly reduced the number of Leach’s Storm Petrel strandings at a mass stranding site in Bay de Verde, NL.
