Last night I captured one of my best images to date. Probably the single most important event in a Guillemot's life. Unable to yet fly, a 3-week-old chick leaps off the cliff, following its dad who will teach it how to fend for itself out at sea over the coming weeks.

Dead Common Murres + gannets showing up on southern Burin Peninsula fr/ Pt May to Lamaline about 25 km. Bob Hennebury (709-857-2228) in Lord's Cove is keeping tally. This may be the 1st wave of avian flu moving from the Gulf of St. Lawrence along the S NF coast. Keep looking.

Bob Hennebury ATVed from just east of Pt May to Lord's Cove on the southern Burin Pen and counted 257 dead seabirds. Mostly murres, 7-8 gannets, 7-8 gulls, 6 puffins and some razorbills!

Had the wonderful opportunity of presenting at #PSG2023 this past week! A great way to meet others in the seabird world and hear all about research being done across the globe 😊

Power down for Petrels! Faculty of Science, Memorial University Student Tori Burt presented her study PacificSeabirdGroup’ 2023 annual conference in San Diego, CA, finding that turning off lights significantly reduced the number of Leach’s Storm Petrel strandings at a mass stranding site in Bay de Verde, NL.

These results highlight the importance of limiting artificial light at night (ALAN) to protect populations of threatened seabirds such as Leach’s Storm Petrels, particularly during the peak stranding period of September through October.
