We've been lucky to have Chandler Anstey as one of our research assistants this summer! He's already picked up #puffin grubbing and #radar testing like a pro
#CorkSeabirds: Posters Amy Wilson from Visual Ecology @MUN: "Assortative mating in Atlantic Puffins? An approach using geometric morphometrics, perceived bill colour, & body condition" While assortative mating has been shown to exist in some alcids, Amy asks if it occurs in puffins.
#CorkSeabirds: Posters Pierre-Paul Bitton: "Atlantic puffins as a model for visual and social communication research" Pierre-Paul describes how the Visual Ecology @MUN lab investigates the social networks of puffins & how the birds could use their bills for individual recognition.
#CorkSeabirds: Posters Raul Zabala Belenguer Visual Ecology @MUN: "Estimating breeding success on Atlantic Puffins: A methodological comparison" Raul presents preliminary results of a study comparing the accuracy of grubbing & burrowscoping, as well as data on puffin breeding success.
#CorkSeabirds: Posters Katja Kochvar Katja Kochvar: "Does the colourful bill of Atlantic puffins reflect parental provisioning effort?" Katja investigates the relationship between bill colour, body condition and provisioning effort for puffins breeding on Gull Island, Canada.
We had some fantastic posters too! Congratulations to Fred Tremblay Fred Tremblay for first place, runner-up Katja Kochvar Katja Kochvar, and highly recommended posters by Sophie Crouch Sophie Crouch and Katrina Davies Katrina Siddiqi-Davies 🥇 #CorkSeabirds
(1/6) I had the great honor and pleasure of working with #Atlanticpuffins for my master’s thesis at Memorial University. The driving question behind my research was: what is the adaptive function of their conspicuously colorful bill? #AnimBehav2023
