#OnThisDay 1810 the body of Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood lay in state at Greenwich until his funeral St Paul's Cathedral in the May. Famous as the Commander who took over the Fleet at Trafalgar on the death of Nelson he fought in most of the battles of the era. A British hero


#OnThisDay 1789 Lt Fletcher Christian led a mutiny on HMS BOUNTY, casting Lt William Bligh, the Captain, and 19 loyal men adrift and fled to settle in #pitcairn Bligh made an epic 3500 mile voyage in an open boat to #timor and set about getting home to alert Royal Navy


30 years ago the Royal Navy decommissioned HMS INSKIP, Blackpool. The site, a Radio Transmission station for the RN is still in MOD use but operated by Babcock. The base was originally a WW2 Air Station HMS NIGHTJAR. On closing concrete from the runway was used to build the M55


#OnThisDay 223 years ago in 1802, the Marines became the Royal Marines and today as then Royal Marines provide Royal Navy and #UnitedKingdom with the highest quality amphibious force in the world.


#OnThisDay 1707 the Acts of Union created the Kingdom of Great Britain from the Kingdoms of England & Scotland. This marks the date that Royal Navy came to exist as the British Navy although both countries Navies are much older.



#OnThisDay 120 years ago in 1905 Fort Blockhouse in Gosport passed from the British Army 🇬🇧 to the Royal Navy as Submarine base HMS DOLPHIN to 1998. There has been a military presence at the site since 1431 due to its location at the mouth of Portsmouth Hbr. Due disposal this year.


#OnThisDay 1982 HMS SHEFFIELD is hit by Argentine Exocet becoming the first Royal Navy ship lost in action since 1945. Though the missile did not detonate it started fires that killed 20 sailors. 260 were rescued by HMS ARROW. SHEFFIELD later sank under tow #remember


#OnThisDay 20 years ago in 2005 the first Type 23 Frigate, HMS NORFOLK paid off HMNB Devonport after only 15 years service. Of the class of 16 only 8 remain in RN service and have none have been replaced. 3, including Norfolk, remain in service with the Chilean Navy.


#OnThisDay 1765 the @royalnavy world famous warship, HMS VICTORY was floated out of her dock and launched Dockyard Chatham She is the oldest warship in the world that is still in commission and was the flagship of Admirals: Howe, Jervis, Keppel & of course Nelson at Trafalgar.


In Royal Navy speak a ‘nozzer’ is a new recruit or a naive young rating/officer. It’s extensive use is light hearted & was the title of a 1987 BBC fly on the wall documentary following the basic training of a number of nozzers HMS Raleigh You can catch the series on You Tube


#OnThisDay 80 yrs ago 1945 the King ordered Royal Navy to ‘Splice the mainbrace’ to mark VE Day and the end of #ww2 in #europe over 50,000 members of the Naval Service & over 35,000 merchant seamen lost their lives during the war. Let us never waste the peace that they won for us



#OnThisDay 70 years ago HMS PROTECTOR, an RN Netlayer since 1936 began her new service as the Falklands and Antarctic patrol & survey ship. She was scrapped in 1970 but today her namesake HMS Protector still surveys the Antarctic as the RNs only Ice Patrol Ship.
