Today in 1917, James R. Watt, learns he has become the mayor of #Albany. Here's why he's important; Watt would become the last Republican mayor of Albany. Women couldn't even vote when he ran. 102 years!

Today in 1899, James Blessing is elected #Albany Mayor. Blessing lost his re-election bid in 1901 to Charles Gaus, becoming the last elected Albany Mayor to serve only one term. 120 years and running! That is remarkable.

Died Today in 1886- President Chester A. Arthur. Buried in Albany Rural Cemetery with his other family. He was a widower - sister Ellen McElroy who lived in #Albany served as his official WH hostess. Arthur gets credit for his attempts to develop a non-patronage civil service.
