What do fungal diseases and snakes have in common? They attack in similar ways! Our researchers have modeled the 3D structures of fungal effector proteins and found some are similar to animal venom and plant defensins. buff.ly/3LK4Dgj | buff.ly/42JucnA James Hane

A pangenome of 173 isolates of Parastagonospora nodorum, a necrotrophic fungal pathogen of wheat, showed widespread potential for RIP-like SNPs across the genome, balanced by negative selection against non-synonymous changes in protein-coding regions. nature.com/articles/s4200…

Our latest paper shows RIP is a strong driver of genomic diversity in fungal pathogens, yet few mutations end up influencing protein diversity. Nevertheless, their potential to rapidly adapt to changing conditions is only ever one generation away. nature.com/articles/s4200…

🌾Pathogens are constantly evolving to outsmart crops! Our team analyzed 173 isolates of Stagonospora nodorum blotch fungus🧬They found it uses mutations like RIP to diversify—while harmful mutations are filtered out🦠 📰 buff.ly/4jXm63B GRDC Curtin University James Hane
