I’m a big fan of getting the chance to openly discus my thoughts around sport science and in particular the use of GPS in team sports. Thanks to Eric for having me on!

"I have previously used multi-mechanical modelling when discussing GPS outputs from training and matches. However, I found it has the potential to be misleading and far too simplistic" Jake Gillies sportsmith.co/articles/answe…

If you’re not bored of my chat, here’s another example of technology in sport and this time it is a sneak peak at how we use our VALD Performance gear at the High Performance Centre.

"GPS metrics do not respect the flow of the match, the ball in play or the nature of the referee. If we try to base an RTP programme on these metrics alone, we will be selling the player short" Jake Gillies sportsmith.co/articles/answe…

Very fond of my time at St. Mary’s. It was a great first step in my career and an unbelievable resource during my time as a student. Although, despite hours of quality coaching, I am still rubbish at Olympic lifting. But that speaks far more about me than the course!

Dislike this narrative of "Aston Villa don't work so hard" because they have less distance. TD is a poor indicator of the work being done. They may have low TD because they're well drilled and don't have to chase after an opponent because of an error. Work done =/= good work.

If you’re a sports performance or medical practitioner, you’re expected to produce insights from the data you collect (whether you like it or not!) This task will hit you in the face real hard if you’re not prepared Let me talk to you about data wrangling… 🧵👇🏼

You cannot tell a flow state by heart rate drop… His HR dropped mostly because the game ended and he stopped moving… That’s not a flow state. Let’s stop with junk science explanations. Let’s use good science accurately.

A potential cat amongst the pigeons with some of my thoughts here but hopefully articulated well enough to cause conversation rather than confrontation! Really happy to get my second Sportsmith article over the line. As always please reach out with any questions!

I can take no credit for the words in this but really enjoyed putting together the visuals to tell the story here. Learning to use ggplot has been a really good addition to my toolbox and it’s always fun to use it for different things outside of GPS!

bristol-sport.co.uk/jobs/first-tea… 1) This is the best job I’ve ever had. I’ve never been as professionally fulfilled, as part of a great team, staff & playing group as when doing this role…
