Something a bit different for you this year. I love having interesting stats in my back pocket ahead of a match to share with my mates. Thanks to Oval, I share a few key data matchups to pay attention to ahead of Newcastle Falcons v Bristol Bears 🐻 this eve!

Ben Spencer has now scored 26 Premiership tries for Bath. He draws level with Mike Tindall as the seventh highest try scorer for Bath.

Very enjoyable game down in Bath. The 38pts Bath scored is the second most they've ever scored in week one of the Prem. Not quite as much as the 44pts they put on the Leeds Tykes in 2003. Bath looked very dominant, but there's a long way to go.

I wouldn't be worried by an increase in kicking this season. Looking at the Oval data, Saints kicked 33 times against Bath, the most of the four sides. But that would only be the 57th most last year. Bris and Falcons did it only 12 & 13 times - 183rd most for Bris

Grassroots Rugby Diary: Played in a match today where the opposition winger pissed on the pitch.... At half time. Then got sent off for punching a guy who made a tackle on him

Really delighted for Argentina. Fully deserved the win but it's just good for the game as well. They look like a completely different team to the one that disappointed last year. A strong Pumas is good for world rugby.

Impressive from Sale Sharks. They limited Quins to 145m with ball in hand. Since records began, Quins have never been held to fewer than 200m on the ground. Oval for the data!
