Jake Shepherd of the Social Market Foundation explains that windfall profits that retailers would receive if MUP was implemented across Great Britain would be around £665 million.

Simply raising alcohol duties to reclaim the windfall profits would not be a targeted way of reclaiming it, as the products that increase in price under MUP would not be affected very much.

Jake explains that the most targeted way of reclaiming windfall profits would be to introduce a minimum unit tax, which would set a floor price for the amount alcohol is taxed. This very specifically targets the drinks that increase in profitability under MUP.
