“A gross misunderstanding.” Devastating from Dr Rachel Clarke, one of the witnesses who—Kim Leadbeater claims—inspired the idea of assisted suicide panels. Clarke confirms that the multidisciplinary teams she recommended are *completely different* from the Leadbeater proposal:

Assisted dying will cause wrongful deaths. How many can we accept? Thank you Mark Mardell Prospect for giving me the opportunity to talk about what I think is the most important (unanswered) question in this debate. prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/a-good-d…

I believe there are valid reasons to support the principle of assisted dying. I might choose it myself. But the vote on Friday is not about the principle, it’s about the workability - and safety - of the Terminally Ill Adults Bill. Let’s recap on what experts are saying… 🧵

Spelling this out - the current Government position is that neither MPs, nor the media nor the public, will see the final text of the Bill BEFORE they are asked to decide whether it’s good enough.

More than sixty disability groups warn that the assisted suicide bill is rushed, unsafe, and discriminatory in a joint letter to MPs.

.Ashley Dalton MP who is a Health Minister and who herself has metastatic cancer, explains why she will vote against the assisted dying bill. All MPs voting today should read this 👇

Parliament is about to vote on the Assisted Dying Bill. I tried so hard to find a way for my vote to be counted so I could stay with my family. It beggars belief that this wasn’t possible. As such, I have just arrived at the House of Commons to vote against this Bill.

Only 30% of pall care is NHS funded. Given today's vote, Keir Starmer, will you least commit to dramatically increasing palliative care provision so that patients don't "choose" to end their lives because we don't give them the care that might make life worth living?

The 10 year plan is apparently being published tomorrow. I’ve been around long enough to see many of these grand policy plans come and go. They generally talk about reducing inequalities, and shifting care from hospitals to the community. I imagine this one will be similar. >>>

A month on from the Commons vote on assisted suicide, it’s clear that quite a few MPs were confused about the bill or influenced by misinformation. Here are 10 examples:

The Assisted Dying Bill is dangerously flawed — offering neither compassion, safety nor choice. The Lords must fix it. My piece in The New Statesman newstatesman.com/politics/uk-po…

Maybe the speech of the day, moving and forensic, from Baroness Hollins. Former president of the BMA and of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Don’t think Lord Falconer even tried to answer the hard questions she put to him.
