It was really humbling to organize the Muscle Aging Symposium with my team Aging Initiative at Harvard alongside Norn Group last week. Truly so much heavy lifting ahead of us in therapeutic development for the muscle, metabolism, and frailty spaces, but some exciting tailwinds!!

Scientists should reject frameworks in which they may be proved "right" or "wrong" - either claim is problematic. Scientists should simply ask questions to frame their experiments; the resultant data will provide the answer. Reproducible data is always the correct answer.

If you frame an experiment with a hypothesis or expectation, and then set out to test that claim, you're always at risk of both confirmation bias and, even worse, establishing a system only capable of finding what you're looking for. Framing with a question forces a wide net.

Is taurine an aging biomarker? Apparently not. Do taurine levels correlate with any sort of health status? Apparently not. Were prior high-profile claims as to the benefits of taurine reproducible? Apparently they were not. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Half my career has been showing a prior claim that X causes Y is not reproducible. Once or twice we found that X caused the opposite of Y. Often we found that Z rather than X caused Y. Sometimes we found that X does cause Y, but also causes some other very very bad things.

No one reads your paper more closely than your biggest competitor. Therefore you should work hard to make sure it's bullet-proof, no?
