MPs now on 2nd day of Report on the assisted dying bill. Speaker expects to call frontbenches no earlier than 1:15pm. Also intends separate decisions on proposals from Waugh, Hillier (x2) & Paul. Hence seems likely Third Reading (final decision) will be pushed to next week.

Key points from #assisteddyingbill debate. ⚫️ Report stage not concluded today; will resume next Friday. ⚫️ Majority behind bill supporters largely holding up. ⚫️ But majority overcome on one new clause. ⚫️ Bill supporters will be optimistic - but too soon to be sure.

Whatever happens, that the #assisteddyingbill has made it to a final Commons third reading vote is remarkable given the procedural challenges facing private members’ bills. MPs on all sides deserve credit for enabling it to be decided on its merits rather than procedural games.

Assisted dying bill has been approved by MPs. Has cleared the Commons chamber. Now will move to the Lords where must go through an equivalent set of stages. Story not over yet!

After last week's vote in the Commons, could the assisted dying bill be blocked in the Lords? New piece by me for The Conversation. 'Assisted dying: what happens now the House of Lords has the bill?' theconversation.com/assisted-dying… #AssistedDyingBill

Few things to note about 'reasoned amendments': 1. Reasoned amendments are procedurally equivalent to rejecting a Bill: voting for it is voting to reject a bill for specific reasons which are put on the record.

This is an excellent & useful insightful comparison of similar events from QMUL colleague Richard Johnson. Blair showed leadership but didn’t bear grudges. Corston went on to share PM PPS duties with Bruce Grocott. @UnHerd unherd.com/2025/06/what-s…

I was interviewed on Today in Parliament on Radio 4 on Friday, discussing how the #assisteddyingbill might fare in the House of Lords. Listen here (around 7 mins in): bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

“You're picking people who you believe that you can pick on and that's bullying, that's not discipline.” Starmer suspending MPs is “punishment” for being “prematurely correct” on government policy, says former political secretary for Tony Blair, @JohnMcTernan. Stig Abell

“True political strength lies not in the ability to punish dissent, but in the confidence to accommodate it” Insightful piece by Tony McNulty on how the government whips are responding to backbench disquiet. theconversation.com/starmers-suspe…
